Just 20 years ago, the primary contributor to screen time was a TV or a desktop computer, typically shared among family members. But, not everything that aired on the TV interested everyone. For instance, I enjoyed watching animated series, while my sister preferred dramas. Likewise, when our father tuned in to the news update, it was usually the time for us to study. Somehow, in those days, the screen time was limited and shared. Even though we had different interests, we still watched some shows and movies together, creating cherished memories.

Fast forward to recent years, and screen time has drastically increased with a minimum of one screen, a smartphone, dedicated to each family member. And for working professionals, irrespective of the field, a computer or a laptop keeps them glued to the screen throughout the day. To point out, a typical day starts with shushing or snoozing that alarm on the smartphone. As soon as one is fully awake, the screen time starts ticking.
Several activities contribute to this screen time, from frequently checking work-related chat or email notifications to checking notifications on the posts you shared recently on social media. From keeping an eye on bill reminders to checking the status of the ice cream, we ordered for midnight cravings. We continuously stare at the screen while doing household chores, work, entertainment, managing finances and investments, or even planning that winter break. The list is endless. And if this is not enough, the mindless scrolling on social media adds more to it.
In a world that’s constantly connected, finding moments of disconnection is the true luxury. Step away from the screens, and step back into life.
Why is Digital Detox important?
While all this screen time makes our lives easy, wealthy, entertaining, and informed, too much screen time impacts our health and wellness. Physically, it can cause eye strain, headaches, disrupted sleep patterns, and bad posture. Mentally, it increases stress, anxiety, and decreased attention span. The continuous inflow of notifications and information can make us overwhelmed and exhausted. Parents face additional challenges regarding their children checking and monitoring their screen time. Increased screen time can impair a child’s social development. Parents should be mindful of what content their children are viewing and how much time they spend. And so, Digital Detox becomes the need of the hour for the physical and mental well-being of the family.
What does digital detox mean?
By definition, Digital Detox is when a person refrains from using electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, and tablets. This break from the digital world is to reduce the previously mentioned effects of screen time. A Digital Detox can be complete or moderate. From my perspective, a complete Digital Detox, an absolute break from digital devices, may not be practical often. Thus, I would like to emphasize Moderate Digital Detox as a practice of mindful use of electronic devices. One can practice Moderate Digital Detox by setting boundaries such as limiting screen time and setting screen-free time slots.
Positive and healthy screen use is possible with proper guidance and consistency.

How to embrace a Digital Detox?
- Set clear intentions: To start, ask yourself why you want to do a Digital Detox. Some common answers may be to reduce stress, improve focus, spend quality time with family, or focus on a hobby.
- Create tech-free zones: Designate specific areas in your home, like dining room or bedroom, as tech-free zones. It will encourage more face-to-face interactions and eliminate digital distractions.
- Schedule screen-free time: Allocate certain hours of the day, such as early mornings or a few hours before bed, to be screen-free. During this time, engage in activities like reading, exercising, meditation, or a hobby.
- Limit non-essential notifications: Reduce distractions by disabling notifications from specific apps. Creators design such apps specifically to grab and hold your attention. It will help you focus better on tasks and reduce the urge to check the phone.
- Limit Social Media Usage: Set time limits on social media apps or take frequent breaks from using them. Limit infinite scrolling of short-form content and move from mindless consumption to mindful learning. Use this time to socialize in person and pursue hobbies.
- Engage in Mindful Activities: Practice mindfulness through specific activities. These activities include yoga, meditation, or simply spending time in nature. These activities help you stay present and reduce the need for digital stimulation. You can also read newspapers or magazines to stay informed and not feel isolated.
